Candidates Gone Wild

The Candidates

City Council: Lewis v. Fritz

What’s the job? Stumptown is governed by our City Council, which includes the Mayor and four other Commissioners; and an auditor. Each is elected citywide to serve a four year term. The mayor and commissioners are responsible legislative policy and divvy up responsibility over the bureaus, such as fire, police, housing, water, environmental services, parks, 9-1-1, neighborhood involvement, and the Portland development commission.

Who’s running? There’s one open seat, as a result of Sam Adams heading upstairs to the Mayor’s office. Amanda Fritz and Charles Lewis topped the (long) list of candidates vying for the seat this spring, and are in a run-off this fall.

Amanda Fritz

WW Says: Amanda Fritz is a longtime nurse with an activist background to match . . . While Fritz occasionally exhibits a fruitcake temperament, we trust it will be kept mostly in check.

Charles Lewis

WW Says: Charles Lewis, founder of the nonprofit Ethos Music Center, is an intriguing candidate who’s spent much of his 37 years doing good works.

County Commission

What’s the job? Libraries, marriage licenses, maintaining bridges, animal control and pet licenses, county sheriff and jails, emergency management, and some other stuff.

Who’s running? There are two seats up for grabs: One in District 3 (Inner SE and a bit of NE) and the other in District 4 (East Multnomah County). Two candidates for each race made it through the non-partisan primary, and are in a run-off this fall.

District 3: Mike Delman

District 3: Judy Shiprack

District 4: Carla Piluso

District 4: Diane McKeel
